MLK (virtual) Day of Service 2021

LET’S HELP INDIANAPOLIS STUDENTS GET BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM SAFELY

The Kennedy King Memorial Initiative (KKMI), along with our supporters Indiana University Health, the Indianapolis Colts, and IUPUI Division of Enrollment Management invite the community to participate in this year’s MLK Day of Service by following his example and honoring his life through a time of reflection, conversation and service to others. Out of an abundance of caution, the 2021 MLK Day of Service will be a virtual event. These community organizations are coming together to collect funds and supplies for Back to (In Person) School Preparedness Kits to be made available to K-5 students in IPS and Indianapolis charter schools. The kits will be distributed to local students with the support of Indianapolis Teaching Fellows.

EACH STUDENT’S kit will include:

  • mask

  • hand sanitizer

  • water bottle

  • pre-sharpened pencils

  • crayons

  • paper, folders

  • healthy snacks

  • other useful supplies

The community is invited to join the efforts by making tax-deductible donations to purchase additional supplies for the preparedness kits. 100% of the donations received will be used to purchase supplies. IU Health team members and all individuals contributing here will have the opportunity to submit notes of support and well wishes to students, which will be included in the kits.

Donations will be collected Friday, January 15 – Wednesday, January 20, 2021.

The community is also invited to visit the Landmark for Peace Memorial sculpture located within Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. To help decrease the spread of COVID-19 in our city’s parks and communities, Indy Parks is reminding the community to follow social distancing and face covering guidelines. Park users should also avoid visiting parks and park spaces if they are sick or are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
